With an estimated 27.6 million victims worldwide*, human trafficking is a serious global problem that is likely both underreported and becoming more frequent: recent reports from both the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the International Labour Organization (ILO ) indicate that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the economic and societal inequalities that are among the root causes of trafficking in persons.
